As a writer/producer with credits on several
feature films including the multimillion dollar “Cruel World”
and the director of a sketch comedy group, event founder, Paul Lawrence
saw that while there were plenty of sketch comedy events around
the country there seemed to be a real shortage of events that offered
sketch comedy artists the opportunity to get exposure to the industry
who could offer them career opportunities. So, the International
Sketch Comedy Championships were born in 2005 with the goal of having
world class sketch comedy groups compete in front of a live audience
filled with not only the general public but entertainment industry
executives who were searching for the next big stars.
After a wildly successful first year of selling out the historic
Los Angeles Theater Centre in downtown LA, the event moved to
world famous Laugh Factory for the next couple of years to make
it easier for industry executives to attend and offer the finalist
groups a chance to perform on a stage that countless thousands
if not millions dream of, but very few actually do.
After a couple of very successful years the event was moved to
one of the other landmark world famous comedy clubs in Hollywood,
the World Famous Improv where another successful show was held
to a sold out crowd.
Significant opportunities have developed for several of the finalist
groups including the group Competitive Awesome who were seen at
the competition by a manager at the prestigious management firm
Shapiro/West & Associates and immediately signed as well as
having worked with SONY on the animated series 'Liberty Meadows’
among their many career achievements.
Another two time winning group, Projekt Newspeak won the opportunity
to have a comedy video produced by the Comedy Time Network, a
market leader in the production and distribution of short-form
comedy programming with over 50 Million views on Youtube alone.
Their video was so successful that over the course of the next
year they produced 5 different videos for the network.
And another winning group, were the winners of the CBS Diversity
Showcase and have had their talented cast members featured on
acclaimed television programming like “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
